What is Geocaching?
It's a modern age treasure hunt! Participants try and track down hidden treasures, known as caches, using GPS devices that lead them to the location where the cache is hidden. Caches are hidden throughout the world, and you are guaranteed to have several caches not too far from your location.
Those who partake in Geocaching adventures are equipped with a GPS device running Geocaching software. (see supplies section) Using the device they select which cache they would like to find based on both difficulty and location. The GPS device then provides the longitude and latitude values of the location of the Cache as well as the location of the participant. The hunt is then on, as the participant uses the device to track down the Cache.
The GPS device will lead the treasure hunter to the location of the Cache within a few metres and from there they will have to discover exactly where the Cache is hidden.
A Cache - What is it?
A Cache, or Geocache, is the treasure at the end of the trail. It may not be gold coins for expensive trinkets, but you never know what you will find at the end of your adventure and that's part of the excitement! Caches can vary but will nearly always contain a minimum of a logbook so you can enter your name and show that you have found the Cache, as well as share the story of your adventure.
Cache's vary in size and larger Caches will consist of "swapsies" left by people who have found the Cache before you. These swapsies can be anything kind of knickknack or ornament. The only rule is you must leave something of equal or greater value than what you take. This way you'll have a great souvenir to remember your day by.
Geocaching Supplies
You don't need much to start your Geocaching adventures. To get a full list of Geocaches then we'd recommend signing up for a free membership at Geocaching.com. Other than that you will need appropriate walking gear and refreshments to take along with you and of course your GPS device so you track the Cache.
Regarding the GPS device you have a choice. You can either get a dedicated GPS device that is designed purely for Geocachers. Such a device will be able to connect to the Geocaching.com database allowing you to select your desired Cache. It will then allow you to track down the Cache.
Alternatively you could use a GPS enabled smartphone and install a Geocaching app onto it.
Geocaching and Kids
Geocaching is great for both adults and kids and makes for great family fun. In fact Geocaching is a great excuse for getting kids outdoors and having fun. Geocaching gets kids active and fit and is great for improving physical development. Of course Geocaching is also a great way to introduce kids to their environment as adults can combine Geocaching adventures with nature trails helping youngsters identify local wildlife and plants.
Geocaching is still a very new type of digital-era adventure. It has only been possible since the year 2000 when GPS technology was greatly improved and hasn't been that popular until several years later. However it is one of the fastest growing past times so it's about time you got started, created your membership and let the adventures begin!
